The story I’m about to share illustrates the power of connection and remembrance. While working in a hospital in northern Alberta, I encountered a patient whose companion expressed concern about her grandmother’s declining health and spirits. During the ultrasound, I discovered the patient had bilateral leg thrombosis and heart disease.

The granddaughter confided in me, worried about what she would do if her grandmother passed away. Her life revolved around caring for her, and she couldn’t imagine life without her. She expressed a wish to have something that would allow her to still hear and feel her grandmother’s presence.

Thinking quickly, I suggested she record her grandmother’s heartbeat on her phone. The next day, the granddaughter returned to the Radiology department to inform me of her grandmother’s passing and express her gratitude for the heartbeat recording, which brought her comfort.

Inspired by this experience, I began offering heartbeat recordings to families of critically ill patients. The response was overwhelmingly positive, as families recognized the value of having a tangible keepsake that could evoke the memory of their loved one.

Our loved ones are the most impactful people in our lives. I believe that preserving their heartbeats in a cherished keepsake can keep their memory alive, even if just for a moment.
